An "extraordinary" debut memoir of first love, identity, and self-discovery among a group of friends who became family in a Montauk summer house (Andrew Solomon, National Book Award winner). They call Montauk the end of the world, a spit of land jutting into the Atlantic. The house was a ramshackle split-level set on a hill, and each summer thirty-one people would sleep between its thin walls and shag carpets. Against the moonlight the house's octagonal roof resembled a bee's nest. It was dubbed The Hive.In 2013, John Glynn joined the share house. Packing his duffel for that first Memorial Day Weekend, he prayed for clarity. At twenty-seven, he was crippled by an all-encompassing loneliness, a feeling he had carried in his heart for as long as he could remember. John didn't understand the loneliness. He just knew it was there. Like the moon gone dark.Out East is the portrait of a summer, of The Hive and the people who lived in it, and John's own reckoning with a half-formed sense of self. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, The Hive was a center of gravity, a port of call, a home. Friendships, conflicts, secrets and epiphanies blossomed within this tightly woven friend group and came to define how they would live out the rest of their twenties and beyond. Blending the sand-strewn milieu of George Howe Colt's The Big House with the radiant aching of Olivia Liang's The Lonely City, Out East is a keenly wrought story of love and transformation, longing and escape in our own contemporary moment."An unforgettable story told with feeling and humor and above all with the razor-sharp skill of a delicate and highly gifted writer." -- André Aciman, New York Times bestselling author of Call Me by Your Name"Out East is full of intimacy and hope and frustration and joy, an extraordinary tale of emotional awakening and lacerating ambivalence, a confession of self-doubt that becomes self-knowledge." -- Andrew Solomon, National Book Award winnerAn Entertainment Weekly Best Book of May 2019A Time magazine Best Book of May 2019Cosmopolitan Best Book of May 2019An O, the Oprah Magazine Best LGBTQ Book of 2019

For the past two decades, critics have bemoaned how New York has lost its cool. The trend setting artists and intelligentsia who earned the city its global reputation in fashion, literature, film, and music has increasingly given way to a monoculture of Wall Street types who erroneously conflate purchasing power with culture and good taste. Against this backdrop, what passes for a breakthrough literary debut in 2019, would surely cause the New York artistic class who shaped the 20th century with abstract expressionism, beat poetry, and the Harlem renaissance to roll over in their graves. At its core, John Glynn’s Out East is a tedious memoir about the boring and vacuous people who have taken over New York and the Hamptons, not because they are particularly talented, intelligent, or deserving—but simply because they can afford to—through overpaid finance jobs or in Glynn’s case, rent subsidies and inherited wealth from his family. There’s nothing exotic or ground-breaking about a group of young people renting a vacation home. Yet Glynn’s conceit begins with the delusional notion that his particular clique of spoiled millennials and their chosen stomping grounds in Montauk, are somehow more evocative and worthy of literary treatment than their gym-tan-laundry counterparts on the Jersey Shore. It’s not clear if readers are meant to feel jealousy or pity for the denizens of Glynn’s not-as-cool-as-they-think share house, yet Glenn insists on tormenting readers with all its nauseating minutiae.Young people on beach getaways have long been motivated by the tantalizing prospect of weekends full of sex, liquor, or status seeking at over-hyped dive bars. But the unexplained paradox that makes Glynn and his real-life characters especially cringe-worthy, is their oblivious douchey privilege and sense of entitlement—venturing from Manhattan to the Hamptons in a Land Rover and ordering bottle service in velvet-roped bars—yet simultaneously low-brow and uncultured in their tastes. They load up on jerky at gas station convenience stores and eschew home-cooked meals in favor of greasy pizza. Not satisfied with turning off his readers by exposing the shallowness of his generation, Glynn manages to tantalize readers with overhyped expectations of a gay romance and his coming out story. But as other critics have pointed out, Glynn doesn’t quite deliver the goods and readers are left unsatisfied. Out East evokes a certain genre of LGBT film and literature that was popular in the late 20th century, in which the protagonist drifts through life sexually frustrated by missed opportunities and unreciprocated love. The most powerful scene in the book takes place when Glynn suffers from a major anxiety attack and summons his helicopter parents to pick him up from the train station. While it would be easy to mock Glynn for exemplifying the millennial cliché, it’s clear that Glynn—like many young people of his generation—has inexplicably struggled with depression, panic attacks, low self-esteem, and anxiety disorder. Despite a supportive family, college education, success in his chosen career, and a broad circle of friends, Glynn feels alienated. Therein lies the true essence of Glynn’s tale. I wish Out East had spent more time exploring the reasons for his anomie. The elephant in the room is why Out East has received so much undeserved hype.
